We invite you to join us for a one-of-a-kind art-making experience in the magical city of Guanajuato! This dynamic 6-day workshop blends continuous line drawing, urban sketching, and gelli printmaking into an exciting creative journey. With Hugo’s rooftop studio, the whimsical streets of Guanajuato, and the richness of Colonial Mexican culture as our setting, you’ll create a handmade sketchbook filled with bold lines, layered textures, and personal expression.
Led by Meagan Burns, a continuous line drawing instructor and workshop leader, and Hugo Anaya, a highly skilled printmaker and host of Alma del Sol, this workshop offers a week of art-making, connection, and thoughtful exploration. Meagan’s continuous line method helps you slow down, see clearly, and draw with intention. You’ll move past hesitation and build compositions that reflect your experience of place. Paired with Hugo’s printmaking instruction, you’ll combine techniques to create a sketchbook that’s visually rich and uniquely yours. Spend a creative and art-filled week drawing and printing with Meagan and Hugo in the streets and studios of Guanajuato.
Learning Goals
Push through drawing fears and fill your sketchbook with drawings of the people, architecture, and street scenes of Guanajuato
Learn the basic principles of gel plate printmaking and how to use layered prints as a foundation for your sketchbook drawings
Gain a better understanding of composition and logistics through a continuous line practice
Build confidence by leaning into your own drawing style—and draw a lively Guanajuato street scene while it's happening

We’re requiring everyone to purchase travel insurance for this trip (include medical evacuation of at least $50,000, international accident & health insurance including primary medical coverage, and trip cancellation coverage). There are also trip policies that include COVID cancellations. We recommend that you get PRIMARY medical coverage, not secondary. We encourage you to purchase trip insurance with “Cancel for Any Reason” to cover you for unexpected circumstances.
In the event you become injured or contract Covid or another illness, we will do what we can to isolate you from the workshop location, but it is your responsibility to get yourself home and treated. Please do not bypass this important step for peace of mind.
Guanajuato Weather
November in Guanajuato tends to bring clear skies, mild afternoons, and cooler mornings and evenings. With shorter daylight hours and changes in elevation, temperatures can shift throughout the day. We recommend dressing in layers—bring a warm sweater, jacket, and scarf for the evenings, and lighter clothing like t-shirts or breathable long sleeves for daytime walks. Closed-toe walking shoes are essential, as we’ll be navigating cobblestone streets and uneven ground. A sunhat and sunscreen are also helpful for afternoon outings.
Health Safety
We take group health seriously and ask that all participants do their part to help create a safe and respectful environment. This workshop is designed to be mostly outdoors, and much of our time will be spent walking, sketching, and eating in open-air settings. Mexico’s culture of street life naturally supports this, but we still ask that you use good judgment and take care of your health before and during the trip. If you’re feeling unwell leading up to the workshop, please communicate with Meagan. Masks are welcome at any time, and we encourage you to bring whatever personal protective items help you feel comfortable. If any local or federal health mandates are in place during our time in Guanajuato, we will follow them. We strongly recommend that you carry up-to-date travel and health insurance, including emergency medical coverage. Personal responsibility is key, and your health choices affect the group—let’s work together to ensure a smooth and enjoyable week.
Suggested Art Materials
Sketchbook: Canson XL Watercolor 140lb, 9"x12" (or try other large sketchbooks)
The agenda is subject to minor adjustments, but the core of the workshop will remain the same. Flexibility is part of the experience.
Bring comfortable walking shoes, a sun hat, your sketch kit, and a sense of humor. We’ll be outdoors most of the time, and some days may include unexpected changes or delays.
The group is limited to 8 participants, plus Meagan and Hugo.
For group meals, we’ll have one bill per table. You’ll be responsible for paying for what you ordered, plus a 20% tip. Please track your items.
Food sensitivities can be accommodated with advance notice, though corn is a key ingredient in much of the cuisine. Vegan and vegetarian meals are available with some extra effort, but this workshop includes both meat and corn.
You must be able to walk unassisted and stand for extended periods. This is a physically active workshop in a hilly city with uneven streets.
Cancellation Policy
All cancellations must be submitted in writing and are considered effective upon receipt. Refunds are not guaranteed unless your spot can be filled by a full-paying replacement.
If you have paid your deposit or full fee and need to cancel due to a medical emergency, you will receive a full refund up until August 15, 2025.
Cancellations made after August 15, 2025 will be handled on a case-by-case basis. A refund is only possible if a replacement participant is found and paid in full.
If a waiting list exists, we will connect you with the first person on that list. If they accept and pay in full, your workshop fee will be refunded.
If there is no waiting list, you may apply your paid fees toward another Art Leap Adventures workshop within 12 months—unless your cancellation occurs within three months of the workshop start date, in which case this option is no longer available.
Art Leap Adventures is not responsible for travel-related expenses (such as non-refundable airline tickets) incurred in preparation for this workshop. Travel insurance with medical and trip cancellation coverage is required.
If an emergency arises and your plans change, please contact Meagan as soon as possible to discuss next steps.
