Message from Meagan Burns:
Hello Curious Artist! The Art Leap Adventures' in-person workshops have recently started after a long, dormant two years, we're now rolling out retreats for small groups of artists to gather in a safe and supportive environment as we enjoy the fellowship of artists once again. My first priority was to reconfigure all workshops to adapt to the safety parameters now essential for group events, as well as to create a space where we can feel safe and supported while gathered -- which is why I chose Alma del Sol in whimsical and colorful Guanajuato, Mexico. I have been offering art workshops in Guanajuato for almost 10 years, creating and hosting events with B&B owner and artist Hugo Anaya, who now boasts not only a super rooftop art workshop space, but he's recently added a printmaking studio on the rooftop terrace, so all our classes are in one magically inspiring location. I've also partnered with Marti McGinnis in years past to offer paper mache workshops in our neighboring and adopted home town of San Miguel de Allende, and I've always appreciated her ability to connect and nurture the inner artist, which is an important element to this retreat. We want to help you "get back out there" with your creativity.

This retreat is specifically designed to help you reignite your creativity after a stressful couple of years. Our workshop space in Guanajuato is a safe and inspiring environment for you to experience the vitality of in-person workshops. I invite you to join myself and my fellow friends and artists Hugo Anaya and Marti McGinnis for a magical and inspiring art retreat that's certain to reawaken your art senses and perhaps start you on a refreshed artistic journey. GATHER AT ALMA DEL SOL, GUANAJUATO

This art retreat is available to a group of six participants plus the instructors, and we'll gather at Hugo Anaya's charming and delightful B&B in whimsical Guanajuato City, Guanajuato. Each participant will have their own room and all gatherings and in-house meals will take place on Alma del Sol's rooftop terrace dining room and printmaking studio -- all in one location! This is also where we meet for our breakfast and daily Happy Hours, two very daily inspiring events in this magical retreat! 

Hugo has two hotel locations in Guanajuato; Alma del Sol and neighboring Hotel del Colors, very close to the Teatro Juarez. We'll make use of both hotels and participants will be housed in both locations. Hotel del Colors is a approximately fours blocks away from Alma del Sol through the most colorful part of the city. We will travel together as a group between the two locations.

In order to attend this art retreat, participants must show proof of vaccination, as we are a group that is responsible and respectful of visiting and traveling through Mexico.

What we'll be doing:

PAPER MACHE WITH MARTI McGINNIS

After our first night's welcome reception, we'll meet after breakfast on the first full day to begin the paper mache workshop with San Miguel de Allende artist Marti McGinnis. Marti has taught paper mache for many years, is well versed in a variety of arts, and she'll show you the ropes of how to design, construct and create a paper mache creature, bowl or hanging piece of your dreams. At the end of this day you will have built your paper mache design, and we'll leave them to dry while Marti will explain next options and steps to creating your art. When we gather for the next session of the paper mache workshop, we'll bring your design to life with paints and "character development" tips that Marti will be sharing with you.

PRINTMAKING WITH HUGO ANAYA

The second art workshop will be a day in the printmaking studio with longtime friend and artist Hugo Anaya. Hugo not only has the two hotel locations in Guanajuato, but he's also built a roof top printmaking studio at Alma del Sol that we'll be able to slip into after breakfast to begin creating monotype prints with newly created techniques to help you create your very own unique monotype print, and a few different versions; Hugo will be advising and guiding you through each step of the process and offer creative options and techniques. Guanajuato is a printmaker's dream location and attracts many printmakers (as well as artists of all types), and Hugo's studio provides all the tools and materials to bring your ideas to life in the printing press.

URBAN SKETCHING WITH MEAGAN BURNS

The third workshop offering will be urban sketching with Meagan Burns. Perhaps you've put your on-location sketching on hold or you've never tried it before -- well here's your chance to baby step your way into drawing on location. Meagan has been teaching sketching in Zoom for the past two years and has designed tools and techniques that will help make drawing a bit easier. Guanajuato provides incredible street scenes that are screaming to be drawn, and after drawing exercise in the roof top terrazzo  we'll head out on the streets to make some art in well-spaced locations.

Urban Sketching:
If you are a regular sketcher, please bring your sketchbook and art arsenal, and if you are new, please gather some of the following materials so you can experiment with a few different tools. We will be providing you with a drawing warm-up sketchbook, and please contact Meagan if you have any questions.

Paper Mache:
Have an idea of what you want to create and be prepared to create a sketch of your idea so Marti can assist you in creating your project.

Printmaking:
Here again you'll be asked to create a sketch of your idea and Hugo will work with you to create your project. An apron will be provided as well as all the materials! 

WHERE IS GUANAJUATO?

Guanajuato City is located in the Mexican State of Guanajuato, and about 1.5 hours from San Miguel de Allende. The closest airport is Leon, Guanajuato (BJX), and a taxi can be arranged to deliver you about 30 minutes to Alma del Sol. Another airport option is Queretaro, Queretaro (QRO), with taxis easily able to deliver you to the hotel.

Guanajuato is a largely undiscovered and charmed Mexican city that is vibrant, delightful and sophisticated, with lots of nooks and crannies to safely explore. Whatever your art medium, Guanajuato is sure to inspire!

Hugo is from Guanajuato City and in addition to being a welcoming hospitality professional at both Alma del Sol and Hotel del Colors for the past 20 years, he's also a skilled printmaker and printmaking instructor, and recently he's designed and built a printmaking studio on the rooftop at Alma del Sol.

WHO IS MEAGAN BURNS?

Meagan Burns is an artist, instructor and workshop facilitator originally based in San Miguel de Allende for many years, but has since moved to Mexico City where she's the #CDMXSketcher. Meagan's been hosting urban sketching, paper mache, printmaking and travel sketching workshops since 2016, as well as partnering with top-notch instructors for educational workshops throughout Mexico. During the pandemic Meagan taught the Zoom Sketch Session three days a week as a way for sketchers to stay engaged in their art during the pandemic., while documenting her life in Mexico City and leaning into Continuous Line Urban Sketching (#CLUSK). Meagan encourages people rely on their uniques lines to tell their stories and looks forward to the stories we will continue to tell through our drawings.
