Join inspiring visual artist and illustrator, Alejandro Anaya, for a one day mixed media and carving on wood workshop in San Miguel de Allende, where you'll learn techniques to combine acrylic, inks, charcoal, graphite, and monotype with aluminum foil on masonite board, as well as carving on the board to combine and create dynamic visual impact of colors and textures, with the look and feel of printmaking.
This workshop aims to explore artistic tools and techniques using acrylic paint, inks, charcoal, simple monotype with aluminum foil, and printmaking carving techniques on masonite wood. We'll discover how easy it is to work on this material, which is why artists like Leonora Carrington and Jackson Pollock frequently used it. We'll experiment with paint, inks, brushes, eye droppers, water based printmaking ink, among other things, so by the end of the workshop, you'll be armed with dramatic illustrative tools and techniques for using them, thereby enhancing your artist repetoire.
Alejandro is a powerhouse illustrator and since arriving in San Miguel de Allende from Mexico City in 2019, he continues to do a deep dive in the world around him, as noted in his dramatic art. Message from Alejandro:
In this workshop, we will introduce students to mixed media techniques to create layered pieces of art filled with intense lines, color, and texture. We will look at different materials that can drastically change the look and feel of the piece with each layer we create. Which materials serve as the base of our artwork which will form the layers that give it depth, and how to combine them with watercolor, ink, stencils, and printmaking techniques.
Participants will choose what kind of work they want to do. After that, we will work on the basics of combining watercolor, with ink, and charcoal, and the use of stencils to contain our textures and shapes. We will also look at how different kinds of materials work together and how we can maximize the way we apply them on top of each other. We will look at the way we can create textures and depth through different materials and techniques.

Supplies Required for Workshop (easily purchased online or local art shop):
- Pencil or mechanical pencil (HB + 2B) and a quality eraser
- 4 Basic brushes for acrylic painting
- Photo of your chosen subject
- No need to purchase masonite board, ink, printmaking ink, charcoal, eye droppers, or
other materials that will be provided in the workshop. - Your sketching art bag with your tools, if you have one

Who is Alejandro Anaya

A native of Torreon, Mexico, Alejandro has been working in the field of communications and media for the past fifteen years, when an opportunity to tell his stories through his illustration presented itself, which then prompted him to take a deeper dive into his art. As a world traveler and passionate student of art history, he's been collecting bits of artist's stories to learn how to better tell his stories, for which he has many. His main focus is illustration, but he's taken it upon himself to explore all the tools, supplies and resources we have available in San Miguel de Allende and beyond, and now wants to share with other curious artists how to incorporate some of these tools into your art, and the various ways to do so. Alejandro has a great passion and curiosity for making art, and looks forward to meeting more passionate artists. Who is Meagan Burns
Meagan Burns artist, educator and workshop creator, originally from Chicago, now living in Mexico City where she leads drawing classes online and in person to help people move past their drawing fears by practicing Continuous Line Drawing in the fascinating streets of Mexico City and beyond. Meagan has been a part of the urban sketching community since 2016 when she helped organize the local sketch community to be a Regional Chapter of Urban Sketchers, and has hosted sketch workshops throughout Mexico in cities such as Oaxaca, San Miguel de Allende, Sayulita, Mexico City, Guanajuato and San Francisco, California. Background is marketing, graphic design and regenerative farming, now she provides her community with art making opportunities, sketch workshops and community bonding.
