Charismatic Urban Sketching Mexico City with Eleanor Doughty
4-Day, 5-Night On-Location Experience Tuesday, August 15 - Sunday, August 20, 2023
Charisma is the magnetic attraction we feel to certain things. Mexico City (recently rebranded as CDMX) has it in spades: it is approachably luxe, historic, and endlessly interesting. The shade from its giant, old trees lining the boulevards make us want to linger for a long time. It’s inviting and comfortable, but it also doesn’t give everything away all at once.
How do we capture what the city makes us feel in a sketchbook? How to make clear, bold work that turns heads?
Eleanor has teamed up with artist/instructor/workshop creator Meagan Burns, an American now living in Mexico City, to offer this experience. They will guide a small group (max 10 students) through a few of the best parts of the city over four days and teach a different workshop topic every day. Meagan has built a solid hospitality network of local business partners who together help create a rich Mexico City experience, featuring the best venues for making art.
With our base in an iconic residential neighborhood of Roma Norte, we'll enjoy a safe, culturally rich experience in Mexico's capital city.
Level: Advanced Beginner: you’re comfortable sketching on location and are acquainted with drawing tools and watercolor technique.
Message from Eleanor
Hola! Thanks for considering my workshop. I have spent five weeks exploring and drawing in Mexico City over the last 12 months, and am very excited to show you how great it is: its food, infrastructure, art, museums, and architecture make it a truly world class city – the largest in North America, by the way!
We’ll see contemporary Mexican and historic Aztec art and draw inspiration from their aesthetics and personalities, we'll drink iced chocolate while sitting & sketching in sidewalk cafés, shaded by mature ficus trees. The city’s vibrant colors, art deco aesthetic, and hand-painted signs will inform our approach to capturing this charismatic place. After five days with Meagan and I as your guides, I’m sure you will leave inspired and enriched.
Workshop Goals
Throughout the course of this 4-day on-location workshop, daily lessons will focus on how to capture your experiences in CDMX in your sketchbook, and to translate the character of the city through pen drawing, watercolor and mixed media.
Find stories in the city and use an illustrator/comic artist’s approach to record them in your sketchbook. Use the strengths of different materials to capture movement and depth. Take inspiration from charismatic Mexican folk art and infuse that in your drawings, and add Art Deco-era stylistic panache to create visually impactful work.
Topics Covered
The workshop series is a mixture of lecture, teaching exercises and demos. They'll take place in outdoor public spaces and inside museums, locations chosen to be optimal for urban sketching. There will also be many chances to sketch independently. - CDMX Charisma: capturing the spirit of the city in drawings! - Sketching people in action quickly - Simplifying and stylizing complex objects - How to include typography in sketches - Showing movement using mixed media - Atmospheric perspective in mixed media - Adding spot color
Outcomes / Takeaways
The goal is for attendees to move away from trying to replicate things exactly as they are and translate how a place makes them feel into a sketchbook. They will learn to use off-beat color schemes, strong value structures and inspired composition techniques to make dynamic illustrations that pop off the page and draw the viewer into a story.

CDMX WEATHER
Dress in Layers! Mexico City enjoys almost year-round ideal weather, although it does have brief rainstorms in the afternoons. Bring some rain gear (like a poncho or umbrella) and a back-up pair of shoes just in case we get wet. Layers are super important to stay comfortable! It gets hot in the afternoon and chilly at night, but is overall really pleasant and non-humid. Locals in CDMX dress relatively conservatively; avoid wearing tank tops and shorts, or you’ll stand out. Dress in Layers!
COVID SAFETY PROTOCOLS
This workshop is designed to be mostly outside and many of Mexico City's restaurants are now out in the streets, although generally speaking much of life has always been lived in the streets in Mexico.Proof of vaccination is required to attend this workshop, as it is show of respect and regard for being a tourist in Mexico. If you have any further concerns about the Covid situation in Mexico, please feel free to reach out to Meagan, but I have been living in Mexico City since 2021 and have found it somewhat easy to navigate an outdoor existence because so much happens outside. Personal responsibility is necessary and current boosters are recommended; let's do what we can to ensure the group has a safe and enjoyable workshop experience.
If Covid protocols are required by Mexican Government and/or City Officials, we will abide and you must agree to abide.

We'll roll with the changes and ask for your patience if a change in the agenda is necessary. - Group is limited to 10 participants + Eleanor + Meagan - During our group meals; we will have one bill per table and you must pay for what you consume plus a 20% tip.
